Paperbark Maple - (Acer griseum)

Originally from China, the Paperbark Maple was introduced to Europe in the early 1900s and came to North America shortly after. Due to it’s difficult propagation, it can be more expensive, but it’s unique beauty and resilience make it a worthwhile investment fir gardens and small landscapes. If you’re looking for a tree that stands out in every season, this one delivers.

The Paperbark(Acer griseum) is a small tree with big visual impact. Its most striking feature is its peeling, cinnamon-red bark, which curls ino papery strips and reveals a smooth, lighter layer beneath. Over time, the bark darkens to a deep purple-brown, adding year-round texture and interest.

In summer, its dark green leaves form a an oval shaped canopy, turning brilliant shades of red and orange in the fall. Slow-growing and reaching about 30 feet tall, it thrives in full sun to partial shade with moist, well-drained soil. It’s resistant to pests and disease, making it a low-maintenance choice, though it’s best to prune in the summer to avoid excessive sap bleed.
